For the last three weeks, five women have gathered around my dining table to read through Psalms for Prayer (She Reads Truth Bible Study). We’ve all gotten up around 7:30am, some of us earlier, to come and have breakfast together and read through the Psalms. I have thoroughly enjoyed this study on a number of levels; The community, the prayer, the ability to talk through scripture and talk about our own personal lives has been really sweet. Bible studies are so life giving when we gather with women who want to know God better. Here are the four things I’ve learned while reading through Psalms.
After reading Psalms for Prayer, I can confidently say that God actually welcomes your questions and doubts. God is so kind to us when we find ourself unable to trust in him fully. He actually wants us to connect with Him in our place of unrest. So next time you are feeling doubtful in your circumstance, afraid that God might not come through for you this time, bring it to Him in prayer.
I talked about this on the most recent episode (#8) but being sad, feeling alone, feeling lost, is not unspiritual. The Psalms teach us how to express our emotions in Godly ways and I love this because sometimes we just don’t know how to put our emotions into words. At times sadness is seen like a problem to be solved or something to be ashamed of; but again, God reminds us through the Psalms that he will protect, surround, and love those who are weary and weak (Psalm 102:1-11 for those who are struggling with depression and Psalm 6:7 for grief). Refer to Psalm 119:1-32 and meditate on God’s word. Psalm 77 is great for when God seems silent and Psalm 86 is a great prayer for times of need.
God doesn’t need your prayer but YOU need to pray and here is why. For starters, prayer brings peace over your life (Psalms 23 for comfort). Prayer is also a way to communicate your sorrow, joy, and longing to God (Psalm 146 and 84). The Psalms also remind us how prayer helps us build trust with God. As soon as I start doubting who He is and if He will come through for me, I can look back at all of the answered prayer and remind myself that yes, God is who He says He is and He will come through; Even if it doesn’t feel like it or even if it is not in the way I wanted or expected.
Pray with a boldness! As I read through the Psalms for Prayer study, I saw pretty quickly that David was not afraid to pray exactly what he was thinking. He never lost sight of his reverence to God but he still prayed about his doubt, his fear, and his insecurities. God is not afraid of your doubt – approach prayer with confidence that God will meet you in your “wilderness” season (Psalm 63 a prayer for trusting God). The Psalms for Prayer study guide is such an AMAZING resource but whether or not you have the study is irrelevant. The Psalms are open to you! Open your bible and get reading – you will see not only raw emotion but how God shows up in the midst of it all.
Please feel free to DM me on instagram about your bible reading! I can’t wait to catch up soon, in the meantime, stay savvy!
